Luhr County Park, 3178 S. CR-150 West, LaPorte, was clobbered by a severe storm back in late June and remains closed because of extensive damage caused by downed trees. But if you need firewood, you have a chance to help the park out by getting rid of some of those fallen trees and limbs.
LaPorte County Parks is accepting applications for a special wood-cutting permit at Luhr. You must submit an application to the administration office at Red Mill County Park, 0185 S. Holmesville Rd., LaPorte, by 4 p.m. Sept. 29; you may also obtain the application online at www.laportecountyparks.org.
All applications submitted by the deadline will be placed into a lottery system. If drawn, the permittee, for a fee of $30, will be allowed to remove firewood from downed/dead trees during a two-week period as designated by the parks department, sometime between October 2014 and March 31, 2015.
