It’s something that people look forward to all year: It’s the LaPorte County Fair! Everyone goes to enjoy the projects, the carnival rides and games, and of course, insanely fattening yet delicious food. But what many people don’t think about is the history of the fair. Where did it all start?
The LaPorte County Fair, celebrating its 170th year in 2015, was established in 1845. Indiana’s oldest county fair was originally located at the current LaPorte High School site, then moved to its present location on West Ind. 2. The first fair held at its current location was in 1963.
The fair was originally focused entirely on agricultural society — promoting quality farm products and domesticated animals. Traditional projects such as sewing and fine arts were added later. The horse races, stage shows, and carnival attractions were added after that.
The LaPorte County Fair was an educational and social event for the people of the area. By the 1900s, youths began to be involved by joining 4-H. In 1918, a boys’ and girls’ club was built and more children were involved.
Currently, there are hundreds of volunteers for the LaPorte County 4-H program, mentoring and assisting over 1,200 students currently enrolled in 4-H.
The most recent addition of the LaPorte County Fair is Pioneer Land. This attraction includes a post office, blacksmith shop, candy store, log cabin, general store, one-room schoolhouse, barn museum, and petting zoo.
The LaPorte County Fair has come such a long way since 1845 and our community can’t help but embrace the changes. For some, it’s a summer activity. For others, it’s a major role in their lives. No matter your perspective, it’s a bet that the fair has brought you joy, and that’s what it’s all about!
